Professor Jason Arday, the former University of Cambridge academic who became the university’s youngest Black professor, has died at the age of 41.
Arday was found unresponsive at his home in Battersea, south London, on August 14, 2026. Emergency services attended the property and he was pronounced dead at the scene. Police initially described the death as unexpected but said it was not believed to be suspicious.
An inquest was later opened into his death. During the hearing, the senior coroner said there was reason to suspect that Arday had died an unnatural death and that a formal investigation was therefore required. The cause and circumstances of his death have not been publicly established.

His resignation came on August 5, nine days before his death. Cambridge subsequently announced an independent review into its decision-making and the support provided to Arday during the period leading up to his death.
