Jeffrey Scott Petty, 59, of Shelbyville, Tennessee, passed away at his home on Friday, September 11, 2026.Known to many in the Shelbyville and Bedford County communities, Jeff lived a life that included military service, law enforcement, welding, family, and a willingness to help those around him.
His passing leaves family members, friends, former colleagues, and others who knew him with memories of a man whose life took several different paths but remained closely connected to his community.
A Life Rooted in Bedford County
Jeffrey Petty was born and raised in Bedford County and remained connected to the Shelbyville area throughout his life.
He graduated from Shelbyville Central High School in 1985. Those who knew him during his younger years remembered his fun-loving personality and goofy sense of humor.
Outside of work and family, Jeff had several interests that made him stand out. He enjoyed collecting comic books, listening to rock ’n’ roll music, keeping unusual pets, and spending time with his distinctive 1965 red Ford Galaxie.
These personal interests became part of the memories family and friends will carry with them.
Military Service and Law Enforcement
After high school, Jeff served in the United States Army before continuing his military service with the Army National Guard.
His commitment to serving others later continued through a career in law enforcement.
Jeff worked as an officer with the Shelbyville Police Department and eventually became Police Chief of the Wartrace Police Department. Through those roles, he served communities in the area where he had spent much of his life.
His years in both the military and law enforcement reflected a long-standing connection to public service.
Jeff Petty’s Career in Welding
After his time in law enforcement, Jeff began a new chapter in his working life.
He earned a welding certificate through Bedford County Vocational School, now associated with TCAT, and went on to work as a welder.
He remained involved in the trade until health issues eventually prevented him from continuing to work.
Even as his professional life changed, Jeff remained known among those close to him for being generous and willing to lend a hand whenever someone needed help.
