Michael “Mike” Sweetney, the former Oxon Hill High School basketball standout who went on to become a Georgetown University star and NBA first-round draft pick, has died at the age of 43.

Who Was Mike Sweetney?
Born and raised in the Washington, D.C., area, Sweetney established himself as one of the region’s notable high school basketball players while playing for Oxon Hill High School in Prince George’s County.
His performances at Oxon Hill earned him major recognition, including Washington Post All-Met Player of the Year honors, before he continued his basketball career at Georgetown University.
At Georgetown, Sweetney became one of the Hoyas’ most productive frontcourt players. During his final two college seasons, he averaged double-doubles and finished his Georgetown career among the program’s historical leaders in points, rebounds and blocked shots.
NBA Career
Sweetney entered the NBA after Georgetown and was selected by the New York Knicks with the ninth overall pick in the 2003 NBA Draft.
He spent two seasons with New York before joining the Chicago Bulls, giving him four seasons in the NBA. Sweetney appeared in 233 regular-season games and finished his NBA career with averages of 6.5 points and 4.5 rebounds per game.
