Duncan Sheik, the Grammy-winning singer-songwriter and acclaimed composer best known for the hit song “Barely Breathing” and the Tony Award-winning musical Spring Awakening, has died at the age of 56.
Sheik died Thursday, September 17, 2026, in Manhattan following a hospitalization. His mother, Suzanne Sheik, confirmed to The New York Times that he died from organ failure. His death came only days after his family announced that he was receiving medical care and was in critical but stable condition.
The news marks the loss of an artist whose career crossed the worlds of pop music, musical theater and contemporary songwriting. His work left a lasting impression on both radio audiences and Broadway.
A Career That Began With “Barely Breathing”
Born in Montclair, New Jersey, in 1969, Sheik developed an interest in music from an early age. He studied at Brown University before beginning his professional career as a singer-songwriter.
In 1996, he released his self-titled debut album, which introduced audiences to his distinctive musical style. Its signature single, “Barely Breathing,” became a major success, reaching No. 16 on the Billboard Hot 100 and remaining on the chart for 55 weeks. The song also earned Sheik a Grammy nomination for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance.
He went on to release nine studio albums, establishing a body of work that extended well beyond his breakthrough hit.
Spring Awakening and Broadway Legacy
Sheik later found another defining chapter in his career through musical theater. Working with lyricist Steven Sater, he composed the music for Spring Awakening, which reached Broadway in 2006.
Based on Frank Wedekind’s 1891 play, the musical explored adolescence, sexuality, repression and difficult social issues through a contemporary rock-influenced score. The production became a major Broadway success, earning eight Tony Awards and a Grammy for its cast recording. Sheik received Tony Awards for Best Original Score and Best Orchestrations.
The success established him as an important figure in modern musical theater and opened the door to additional stage projects, including American Psycho, Alice by Heart and The Secret Life of Bees.

Sheik continued creating music and theater projects until the final months of his life. At the time of his death, he was associated with the upcoming Off-Broadway musical Memoirs of Amorous Gentlemen, while a new Off-Broadway production of Spring Awakening was also scheduled for later this year.
His death came shortly after his family publicly shared news of his hospitalization and asked fans and supporters to respect their privacy. His official social media account later confirmed that he had died Thursday night surrounded by loved ones.
